PostgreSQL 自定义函数表达式选择性评估算法 - Statistics, Cardinality, Selectivity, Estimate
背景
在数据库中,统计信息是估算成本(选择性)的重要基础,目前在PG中统计信息的内容要么是单列,要么是自定义的多列统计信息,要么是表达式索引的统计信息( 《PostgreSQL 11 preview - 表达式索引柱状图buckets\STATISTICS\default_statistics_target可设置》 )。
并不会针对没有创建索引的表达式构建统计信息。
那么当输入条件的一端是表达式(并且没有索引)时,如何评估表达式与操作符发生计算时的选择性呢?

1、普通字段的选择性,算法对应=操作符pg_operator.oprrest字段对应的代码。

2、改成自定义函数表达式如下,自定义表达式由于没有统计信息,所以表达式的估值行数很不准确。

自定义函数(表达式)柱状图统计信息收集
前面的例子,自定义函数值没有统计信息柱状图,是不准确的根源。
那么自定义表达式如何收集统计信息呢?
实际上PG支持表达式索引,索引中包含了表达式的值,以及对应的HEAP TABLE 行号,有了表达式的值,实际上就可以作为统计信息收集的要素。
如下:
1、创建表达式索引
postgres=# create index idx_a_1 on a(f1(id));
2、收集统计信息
postgres=# vacuum analyze a;
3、通过索引名称定位,查看pg_stats内部是否有表达式的统计信息了,没错,以及有了。

小结
当WHERE 条件中的表达式并非普通列,而是表达式时,在表达式没有索引的情况下,表达式的选择性可能是非常不准确的。
为了得到更好的统计信息,可以创建索引,因为索引内包含了这个表达式的结果值,索引创建完后,就可以收集这个表达式的统计信息了。有了统计信息,表达式的评估,选择性计算就会非常准确。

不管是什么表达式,评估选择性都用到了restriction_selectivity,本文通过对PG的选择性代码添加elog,开启DEBUG可以打印输出当时的选择性。
